Why writing about ourselves is so hard.
Raise your hand if you have thoughts about yourself that you might not want others to know. Or maybe you voice them in small circles or with your best friends or partners.
Me, too.
These thoughts we have about ourselves, well, they sometimes get in the way of doing so many things. And for sure they get in the way of us writing about ourselves.
We all know this voice very well. As soon as we sit down to do anything, it’s telling us we should get a snack. And listen, I’m all for snacks. But sometimes I just need to focus and knock out a blog post or a newsletter.
This voice is also always asking me really annoying questions like, “Does anyone even care about what you’re writing right now?” or “You’re not a writer. And other people will find that out, too.”
These thoughts are pervasive and they stop us from doing all sorts of things, not just writing about ourselves.
But, when you open up a business you’re most likely going to need to be doing some writing about yourself. Humans who buy stuff from you might want to know about YOU.
So, making friends with this voice is the first step. When my inner critic tells me that no one wants to hear from me, I’m just always wondering how it 100% knows this? What is it doing? Constantly taking polls finding out what people think about me?
It’s preposterous!
And when I realize that it’s main job is to try and stop me from making a fool of myself, I’m more gentle and I also laugh a little. I thank that voice, and then remind it that I’m going to continue being amazing anyway.
So, if you find it hard to write about yourself, let me help you learn how to make friends with that pesky inner critic. It’s not that you’re not good enough at the technical stuff, it’s the emotional stuff that’s standing in the way.
