The power of accepting (maybe loving) our current circumstances.

It’s Fall, y’all. There’s a chill in the air. There’s a classic fight on social around when it’s acceptable to start drinking your Pumpkin Spice Latte– and if it’s really acceptable to do it or not. In fact, we know the answer is October 1st, right?

Life is changing.

This always gives us a perfect opportunity to practice acceptance. And loss. The loss of blindingly bright days on the boat, sipping a rapidly-melting frosé, wearing paper-thin dresses and feeling the warm grass beneath your toes.

I love these things about summer. And I will grieve them– until next season.

But I love fall, too. In truth, I love all seasons. All weather. But I had to practice that.

There is a lot of suffering in the world. So much of what I do in coaching is help my clients see where they’re causing unnecessary suffering because life is already too damn hard, ok? There is so much wasted energy in rejecting what is.

Where are we adding to the pain we feel by deciding to not accept what’s true? Listen, we don’t need to be excited about our own impatience or financial situations or dirty apartments.

But when we decide to reject and hate and despise those things, we just pile on more suffering.

There is more power in saying this:

“I really hate that my apartment looks like a tornado came through and yet I’m just one person– but I’m also going to just breathe through it,”

than there is in saying this:

“I hate that I always let my apartment get this way, what’s wrong with me?!!”

Protect your energy. Stop piling on extra suffering. Yes, your apartment. is a disaster. Accepting it is a lot easier than rejecting it, or you.

And you know what? You might just get around to picking some stuff up if you’re not so busy being mean to yourself.
